Hamdi Karakayalı

I was born in Ankara in 1963.

I completed my middle school and high school education between 1975-1982 at Ankara Atatürk Anatolian High School.

I started Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine in 1982 and graduated as a Medical Doctor in 1988.

My specialization training life started as a Research Assistant at Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine, Department of General Surgery in the same year. I became a General Surgery Specialist in June 1994.

In September 1994, I started working as a specialist doctor at Başkent University Faculty of Medicine, Department of General Surgery, alongside Prof. Dr. Mehmet Haberal, the founding rector of the university and the pioneer of organ transplantation in Turkey. From the first day I started working, I found myself in the organ transplantation studies and the team. I experienced the excitement of the first liver transplantation surgery in Turkey, which this team performed in 1988, during my first year at Hacettepe as an assistant, and I also took part in the follow-up of that patient. I learned everything I know about organ transplantation from Prof. Dr. Haberal, Prof. Dr. Nevzat Bilgin and Prof. Dr. Nebil Büyükpamukçu, whom I remember with mercy and gratitude. Organ transplantation activities in Turkey owe the point they have reached today to them.

I received the title of Assistant Professor in 1996, Associate Professor in 1998 and Professor in 2005 at the same institution.

During this period, although my main professional interests were liver transplantation, kidney transplantation, liver tumors, surgical diseases of the gallbladder and bile ducts and surgical diseases of the pancreas, I also had the chance to work together with my late Professor Prof. Dr. Hüsnü Göksel, who was trained by Haagensen, one of the founders of breast surgery in the world, who devoted his entire life to the surgical treatment of breast diseases.

After 1999, I worked as the Deputy Head of the Department of General Surgery at Başkent University, and after 2010, I assumed the responsibilities of Liver Transplantation and Kidney Transplantation in addition to the Head of the Department of General Surgery. I also took part in the establishment of Organ Transplantation Centers in the Application and Research Hospitals of Başkent University in Istanbul and Adana, and in 2010-2011, I performed transplantation surgeries in these centers once a week and trained the teams there.

Between 2002 and 2010, I was assigned as a consultant in the Liver Transplantation and Kidney Transplantation Scientific Boards of the Ministry of Health at different times.

Between September 2011 and October 2013, I continued my duties as the Head of the Organ Transplantation Center and Liver, Bile Duct and Pancreas Surgery Unit at Private Gaziosmanpaşa Hospital in Istanbul. In November 2013, I moved to Medipol Mega University Hospital with my team and established the Liver and Kidney Transplantation Centers, where I served as the Director of the Organ Transplantation Center and the Liver, Bile Duct and Pancreas Surgery Unit until October 2017.

In October 2017, I moved to Acıbadem Health Group and started working as one of the responsible instructors of the Liver and Kidney Transplantation Centers, and as of May 2024, I assumed the role of the Director of Liver, Kidney and Pancreas Transplantation at Acıbadem Atakent University Hospital.

Since 2020, I have also been the Chief Physician of Acıbadem Atakent University Hospital.

In this journey that I started in 1993, we have performed more than 2000 liver and 3000 kidney transplantation surgeries in both adult and pediatric patient groups.

I have 275 scientific studies published in international journals.

I am a member of many national and international professional associations, and I served as the Secretary General of the Turkish Organ Transplantation Association for many years. I served as the Secretary General of the Middle East Society for Organ Transplantation (MESOT) Board of Directors between 2006-2008 and as the Treasurer between 2008-2012. In 2006, I was among the New Key Opinion Leaders of the World Transplantation Society.

I am a member of the Editorial Board and a reviewer in various national and international scientific journals related to organ transplantation.

I was accepted as an honorary member of the European Board of Surgery in 2011, and as a member of the American College of Surgeons in 2012, and I received the titles of FEBS (Fellow European Board of Surgery) and FACS (Fellow American College of Surgeons).

I am married to Prof. Dr. Feza Y. Karakayalı and I am the father of two daughters named Lal Ilgın and Ela Defne.
